Projects supported by GTO

(20 July, 2006, by Christoph Hinkelmann)

The GTO regularly supports research projects by German and international scientists, as well of amateurs, engaged in birds and avifaunas of tropical and subtropical regions. These investigations include research projects in the home countries of the birds as well as in aviculture or e.g., examinations based on scientific collections.

Research projects accepted for support are those resulting in interesting new findings. Since GTO is a comparably small organization, we can only provide partial support, and not take charge of the complete support of a given project. However, the amount of supported investigations as well as their spectrum of themes are, after more than 20 years of funding, certainly considerable.

Within the last 10 years, these projects were supported in part by GTO:

Martin Päckert, Dresden: Differentiation of endemic passerines in Taiwan based on molecular genetic and bioacoustic markers.

Southwest Pacific lorikeets in their environments. Status of three species of the genus Vini (Gerischer, Polynesia, 2006)

Effects of fragmentation of dry forests on diversity and composition of birds and primates in the Departamento of Santa Cruz (Pyritz, Bolivia, 2005)

Effects of agricultural land use on the avifauna of tropical rain forests (Bobo, Cameroon, 2005)

Relationships between ecology-based population dynamics and neophobia in New World icterids (Mettke-Hofmann, USA, 2004)

Phylogeny of woodcreepers (genus Certhia) and cryptic species in the woodwarbler genus Phylloscopus (Martens, Nepal, 2004)

Effects of habitat fragmentation on diversity and abundance of ant-following birds in East Africa (Peters, Kenia, 2004)

Birds as indicators of biodiversity in tropical landscapes. Examples from the national parks Korup and Mbam/Djeren (Bobo, Cameroon, 2003)

Altitudinal bird migration in the national park Carrasco and its vicinity (Kreft, Bolivia, 2002)

Ecology, taxonomy and relationships of Chinese woodcreepers (genus Certhia) (Martens, China, 2002)

As an equivalent, the GTO expects of every supported person or team resident in the German language countries of Central Europe that she/he/they will report once on his/her/their project results in our annually organized Conferences on Tropical Birds. If supported persons of other countries are interested in presenting their results, they are, of course, welcome to do so. Participation in our Conferences on Tropical Birds in the past resulted regularly in interesting contributions and discussions. Besides, supported persons are obliged to mention the funding by the GTO in their publications on these investigations. This is as well a contribution to the public engagement of the GTO. Research funding is thus an important point to establish the GTO in the scientific ornithological community.

Funding applications should be sent to:
